interview with the ellenorlions hospice

Interview with the EllenorLions Hospice

As part of my research for my FMP I want to look into some charities who raise money for the disabled. I went to my local charity shop and have arranged an interview to find out more about the charity

1. Tell me about the charity. Who do you raise money for?
The charity cares and supports children, young people, and adults. Care is provided within the hospice or the patients home.
They deal with people who have life threatening diseases. There is also a transition room for 14-19 year olds which helps them go from child care to adult care.

2. Where is the hospice based?
The bedded hospice is based in Northfleet, but also based in the London borough of Bexley, Dartford, Swanley and Gravesend. Bexley only provides care for children. They have also extended care to the areas of Tunbridge, Maidstone and Sevenoaks in the past year, However they are constantly fundraising as there are only 2 nurses looking after 26 children in these areas.

3. How long has the charity been funding money for the disabled?
The EllenorLions Hospice has been around for 1984, and 10 years later in 1994 Chips came into place, which provides care for children. In one week they can suport 126 children.

4. The money you raise, what does that fund?
91p-£1 goes towards patient care, and the other 9p goes towards the running of buildings, such as the Hospice.
Respite services within the home.

5. How long has the charity been around for?
It has been around for 28 years, first starting out as the EllenorLions in 1984 and expanding to Chips in 1994.

6. What kind of care do these people in the hospice receive?
Patients recieve respite care, chemo treatment, bloods, doctors, washing facilities to have a bath, hair care. They also go into residentual and nursing homes where they teach staff how to deal with a situation when someone passes away.

7. What fundraisers do you do to raise money?
Summer fetes, open gardens where people have stalls in their garden and sell things to raise money, lights of love where loved ones are written in a book and money is donated, this event normally takes place over the christmas period, bucket collections, coffee mornings, marathons, events to do with London 2012 olympics, casino nights, gala dinners, balls.

8. How do you promote your charity?
Leaflets, DVDS, fundraising packs, fundraisers, website including the EllenorLions website and also on Facebook and Twitter, the press, e news letters, talks, radio, posters, flyers, radio

9. How does the shop help the hospice?
All the money that the shops raise goes towards Hospice care, and running of the hospice. They also have a donation box and old mobile phones can also be donated to raise money.

10. What kind of disabilities do the people in the hospice have?
Heart disease, lung disease, cancer, leukaemia,Cystic Fibrosis

11. Is there a particular age group that the hospice specialise care for?
Chips specialise care for children from ages 0-19 14-19 is transition hospice which helps a young person go from child care to adult care and 19 yrs plus is adult care

12. When did chips come into place? Why did that come around?
chips came into place in 1994, and it came around because there wasn't any care for children and the charity wanted to help a variety of different age groups that included children.

13. What part do chips play?
Chips provide care for children and this care can be done either at home or within the hospice. Care is usually done at home as relatives want to be with the child.
